Things get crazy on White Rim Trail Overlanding – Part 2

With washed-out trails, damaged shelf roads, and burning through gas like crazy, our adventure on the White Rim Trail was most certainly NOT a 3/3 as most trail guides say it is.

Our insane adventure on White Rim Trail and The Shafer Trail Switchbacks – Part 1

We got started on our adventure by heading down the Shafer Trail Switchbacks and then on to washed-out trails, damaged shelf roads, and burning through gas like crazy, our adventure on the White Rim Trail was most certainly NOT a 3/3 as most trail guides say it is.

Moon Gulch – Rollinsville CO

Moon Gulch goes between Apex and Rollinsville. While this is a low moderate trail, it began raining on us pretty well, and with the long, off-camber stretches, it got a bit sketchy in a few spots. Generally,, this is a pretty easy trail between the two cities.

A Local Favorite – Pickle Gulch – Blackhawk Co

Technically Forest Service Road 718.1 is called Pickle Gulch because of the name of the campground at the trailhead. The road is fine for most 4×4 vehicles with some good ground clearance and there are a few interesting sites along the way. The snow will get quite deep during the winter, so it is best to avoid it after the snows start.

Above the treeline in Colorado – Kingston Peak

Kingston Peak offers a 360-degree view of several fourteeners. Much of this road is above timberline and is steep and rocky in sections. A high-clearance/4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. There is hiking access to the James Peak Wilderness Area from the Kingston Peak road. Kingston Peak is a low-moderate trail but does require some extra ground clearance. The trail opens July 15 and is usually open until mid-late September or whenever snow forces it to close.
