Starlink just gave its most portable plan a massive boost. As of January 13, 2026, the entry-level Roam plan has officially doubled its high-speed data allowance.
What was previously the Roam 50GB plan is now Roam 100GB. The best part? This change comes at no additional cost for most markets. Whether you’re a digital nomad or a weekend camper, your data ceiling just got a lot higher.
Here is a breakdown of what this change means for your connection and how the new “unlimited” structure works.
What’s New?
The core of the update is simple: 100GB of high-speed “Mobile” data per month. This applies to the same portable hardware (like the Starlink Mini) and maintains the same continental coverage as before.
However, the way Starlink handles “overages” has fundamentally changed.
No More Per-GB Charges
In the past, if you hit your 50GB limit, you could opt to pay $1 for every additional GB used. That system is now gone (except for those using “Ocean Mode”).
Instead of paying for extra data by the gigabyte, Starlink has moved to a tiered speed model:
- High-Speed (First 100GB): Full performance for streaming, gaming, and video calls.
- Unlimited Low-Speed (After 100GB): Once you hit your limit, your service will not cut off. Instead, you move to unlimited low-speed data.
Note: Low-speed data is intended for basics like email, texting, and voice calls. You will likely experience buffering or lag if you try to stream high-definition video or download large files in this mode.
How to Manage Your Data
Starlink has added a few safeguards to help you track your usage so you aren’t surprised by a slowdown:
- Notifications: You will receive an alert when you have reached 80% and 100% of your monthly high-speed allowance.
- The Upgrade Path: If you hit the 100GB limit and desperately need high-speed data back, you can upgrade to the Roam Unlimited plan via your account portal.
Important: If you upgrade to Roam Unlimited, that plan stays in effect for future billing cycles. If you only wanted it for a one-time boost, you’ll need to manually switch your plan back to Roam 100GB in the portal before your next billing date.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
No. If you were already on the Roam 50GB plan, you have been automatically moved to the 100GB tier.
- Active Users: Your data cap simply refreshed or expanded.
- Paused/Cancelled Users: If your service is currently in “Standby Mode,” the 100GB plan will be waiting for you whenever you decide to unpause.
Quick Comparison: Roam 100GB vs. Roam Unlimited
| Feature | Roam 100GB | Roam Unlimited |
| High-Speed Data | 100GB | Unlimited |
| Post-Limit Speed | Throttled (Unlimited) | N/A |
| In-Motion Use | Supported | Supported |
| Best For | Part-time travelers, hikers, backup | Full-time nomads, heavy video users |
The Bottom Line
By doubling the data and removing per-GB fees, Starlink is making the Roam plan much more predictable for your wallet. You no longer have to worry about a “runaway” bill if a device runs a background update; instead, you’ll just see a dip in speed until you decide to upgrade or your next month begins.
