Hackett Gulch trail near Woodland Park Colorado can be a tricky trail in good conditions, but in the snow, it can be quite slippery. We headed out to check the trail conditions and did our share of slipping and sliding in the snow. Whenever you go snow wheeling, it is very important to never go alone, have proper recovery gear, radio communications, and keep your distance from each other.

We set out to test ARB Tred Pro traction boards against some inexpensive traction boards in deep snow. The temperature dropped to about 15 degrees and the snow was up to 4′ deep on Rollins Pass, outside of Nederland Colorado.

China Wall OHV Trail is a 9.2 mile out & back trail near Lake George Colorado. Rated as a Moderate trail, China Wall offers some fun obstacles during the dry season, which become quite challenging in the snow. The trail has a 1,300′ elevation gain and ends at a turnaround spot right next to a river, making for a great spot to stop for lunch.

Chinaman Gulch is open all year and with “generally” a light amount of snow, it can be good for some winter wheeling. This trail is best suited for modified vehicles and is a high moderate rated trail. Be prepared, during the summer, this trail can take around 4-5 hours to complete and during the winter, it can take up to 7 hours, and with the shorter winter days, you need to plan accordingly.

It is winter time in Colorado and besides taking the Jeep out for some snow wheeling, one of the next best things to do is to get on a snowmobile and rip up some trails. We headed over to Grand Adventures in Winter Park and rented a couple of sleds for the day.

Slaughterhouse Gulch is located near Baily Colorado and is generally open from May to Dec 31st. With a mid-moderate rating in good conditions, we went to see how it was after a light snow.
