Above the treeline in Colorado – Kingston Peak

Kerry Garrison, October 8, 2021January 15, 2024

Kingston Peak offers a 360-degree view of several fourteeners. Much of this road is above timberline and is steep and rocky in sections. A high-clearance/4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. There is hiking access to the James Peak Wilderness Area from the Kingston Peak road. Kingston Peak is a low-moderate trail but does require some extra ground clearance. The trail opens July 15 and is usually open until mid-late September or whenever snow forces it to close.

A Perfect Trail – Imogene Pass

Kerry Garrison, September 3, 2021January 15, 2024

Imogene Pass, in the San Juans, is a gorgeous trail with some very narrow shelf roads. While this isn’t a technically difficult trail, it may well test your nerves because of the steep drop-offs. The reward is stunning views and glimpses of old abandoned buildings and mines. This is a “must do” trail if you are visiting the San Juans, and it also gets you a Jeep Badge of Honor.
